The sound was definitely something chewing as I was about to fall into a deep sleep.
I woke with a body jolt. “Jon what’s that sound?” I asked.
“I don’t know. It’s outside though, right?” he said. We listened some more.
“Yah, I think it’s outside.” And although deep down I knew it could be inside the RV, I just couldn’t bother with the whole ordeal. I rolled over and fell asleep.
Jon laid there, drifting in thought. He was sure now what the sound was. It was a beaver gnawing on a tree next to us in the swamp. Parked in the site our parents created for us on their property, we were surrounded by trees and wildlife. The beaver was chewing with so much force that Jon was sure the tree was ready to fall. With the thought of a tree falling on the RV, Jon opened his eyes.
Expecting to investigate the noise outside, he walked towards the kitchen where the gnawing was coming from the spice drawer. There was a beaver in the spice drawer! No, unfortunately not. Tootsie the Terrier confirmed the gray visitor with an excited tail wag and sniffing of the perimeter.
The next day we found spoons, spice lids, and spatulas with teeth marks along with rice sized droppings throughout the pots and pans cabinet. Our visitor found a home in the live trap stored under the drawers.
I wrote on Twitter, “I haven’t had electricity for 5 days, and a mouse ate my spoon.”
With electrical issues we were unplugged for five days as I moved food into our parents’ house. It ended up that after Jon traced and tested in the RV, the previously repaired extension cord had reversed wires. We were so happy that nothing was wrong with the RV (and the mouse was gone).
Since our beaver mouse visit, my dad has trapped about a dozen mice under the tires. Minnesota fall weather encourages them to find a warm home. And who wouldn’t want to live in a giant butterfly?
It is apparent that it is next to impossible to find all of the crannies that a mouse could potentially visit in our old rig. I just accept it as part of living in an RV and pretend it never really happened.
